The Young Guns of Poker

Young trail blazers of online poker boom are recongized with their own poker tournament!

It's great to see the World Poker Tour establishing special tournaments for the Young Guns of Poker. All competitors will be under thirty and the competition kicks off on the 31st August. Young players have been at the forefront of the massive new interest in poker and these tournaments recognise that fact.

Players like Joe Cassidy, a brilliant 24 year old law student, will be heading up the competition. Player of the Year 2004, Daniel Negranu, is on record proclaiming Cassidy as the best young player under 25 he's ever seen. Other Young Guns of Poker to watch are the World Series of Poker bracelet holder Thomas "Thunder" Keller, also 24; two time World Series bracelet winner Scott Fischman; and Pete "The Mouth" Lawson. Our pick as the outsider would be David "The Future of Poker" Williams. All of these young guys are extremely aggressive players and the short handed style of the tournament, which will be televised, has fast and furious written all over it.

POKER CHARITY EVENT
Also on the 31st August, some of Hollywood's best known female stars will be heading up a large celebrity poker charity event at the famous Bicycle Casino in California with the major part of the proceeds donated to breast cancer research. Poker charity events are really taking off now as the game dramatically improves its image.

BULLISH WITH HOLE CARDS
It's almost always a mistake to show your hole cards after you've bluffed a win. Why let your opponents know if you stole the pot or won it with a premium hand? It's knowledge they can store for another game and you can live without them having that kind of intel for free. Not so at the Gran Casino Barcelona where we watched the Spaniards playing a huge tournament revealing their hole cards to one another, even when they lost. It's a but like the running of the bulls. They want you to know what they're made of so they can be something else the next time you go heads up with them. It was only just possible to see this through a cloud of Cuban cigar smoke so thick it wreathed the table in a permanent fog. If this had been Nevada and not super cool Barcelona, Spain, the entire statewide police force and fire brigade would've been hosing everyone down pre-arrest. Despite the entertainment value, I'd stick to not showing your hole cards, unless you're on holiday in Spain.
