D’YA FEEL LUCKY, PUNK?
Sometimes at night you switch on the PC for some online poker and you just know it’s going to be a winning evening....
Your first hole cards are a pair of kings and a king comes down with the flop along with a 4 of diamonds and an 8 of spades. No likely threat from the community cards and you’re looking at three-of-a-kind. It doesn’t get any better than this. You’ve played everything cool watching players donate to the pot with your name on it. The turn produces a 7 of hearts and you’re heads-up with an online player calling himself “The Sum of All Fears” (Give me a break! I can almost see a Morgan Freeman look-alike on the other side of the world facing me down in front of his Sony Vaio laptop.) The river delivers a jack of clubs and you can begin to feel your arms going round the pot as you haul it towards you. Yep! You guessed it. Mr Fear has the 5 and the 6 and my belief in luck takes a kick in the teeth with a steel capped Sony boot! The lesson, however, came fully into focus as I ploughed on throughout the night, not chasing, but just changing gears where appropriate. Aggressive when the hand dictated, throwing in the occasional bluff from early position and taking advantage of late position. Just grinding the games out in a rather dark mood which felt anything but lucky. The lesson? I finished up $500. Not bad for an unlucky night and, more important, a vote of confidence in the importance of trusting your poker skills and employing what you’ve learned. Most of us these days start our card career with a good online tutorial. Try the free poker school at dailystarpoker.com. It doesn’t matter if you’re feeling lucky or not.

FREQUENTLY ASKED POKER QUESTIONS
Q: Is it worth going from site to site trying to pick up a bonus at all of them?
A: Sounds great, doesn’t it? The reality, as you’d expect, is somewhat different. Most sites offer a bonus to get you started but they require that any new player plays a certain number of raked hands in order to make the bonus payable. There is a type of person with more time than skill prepared to spend their waking hours going from site to site in order to play the minimum number of hands required in order to earn a bonus. It’s a lot of work, form filling and sweat for very little real reward. It tends to be done by inexperienced players who would find it much more profitable to stick with a site they feel secure with and concentrate on improving their game, using free tutorials and turning themselves into REAL winners.
