CRITICAL DECISIONS
If you are considering becoming a poker player you need to be aware of the following critical decisions. Even if you have been playing for a while you may not have ranged these decisions in your mind in their order of importance. Let’s attempt to do that.

1) Choose the right game.
You’re looking for a game with recreational players at the table. Not old hands. Railbird a while from the sidelines and watch several of the online games in progress. It soon becomes reasonably obvious what you’re going up against.
2) Position.
Position means power. The later your position the greater your power. It’s a big advantage to act after you’ve seen what all of your opponents have decided to do.
3) Starting hands.
Most players have come to play, not to fold. That’s their first mistake. Don’t be afraid to fold your hole cards if they’re not strong enough. You’re starting out. You’re not yet ready for the “Any two cards can win it!” mantra. When you’re Phil Ivey, maybe it’ll apply. But not yet.
4) Selectivity.
Th is follows on from the last decision. If your hole cards were good enough to proceed, don’t be scared to fold at the flop if it doesn’t give you what you’re looking for. Another common failure among beginners is their desire to play too many hands. Be selective while you’re learning your craft.
5) Aggression.
Assuming you’ve been selective and have a worthwhile hand. Now is the time to be aggressive. Selectivity first. Aggression second, unless you’re an experienced player.
6) If you have a run of losses, quit, or move to another game.
The reason for this is your table image when you are losing works against you. Opponents are like jackals. They’ll believe your bluffs and raises when you’re on a winning streak but they’ll call and raise them when you’re losing because they’ll assume you’re desperate to claw back your losses.
